Update on The Jane Doe Files

Parent: This is a follow-up to my formal request dated October 16 2025, for a complete copy of my CPS case file, including all diagnoses, reports, notes, and all internal and external communications related to my case.

To date, I have not received the requested records or a timeline for their release. I have been informed I have a legal right to these documents.

Please provide confirmation of when the full case file will be released. If the records cannot be provided promptly, please state the reason for the delay in writing. Thank you.

CPS: Your CPS record is ready, please advise if you will be picking up your record in person at our agency (photo id and signature required) or if you would prefer it be mailed certified to you (signature required). If you are picking up your record in person, then please provide the date you plan to do so.

Parent: Thank you for your response. Certified mail will be fine.

Parent: The guys at the post office said you need to make copy of the file because they don't have it and it's been over thirty days. Please let me know a few dates and times you are free next week and I will come pick it up.

The parent stopped by the office twice since and the worker is not in the office, answering emails, or making phone calls that she promised back.

In State Fiscal Year (SFY) 2025, which ended June 30, 2025, the Office of the Children's Ombudsman (OCO) in Virginia received 466 complaints regarding the conduct of local departments of social services.  While this number reflects formal complaints rather than a general sentiment of "unfairness," it is the primary metric for tracked dissatisfaction.
