The Lupus Flare Adventure!

In the colorful, busy world inside the body, something wild happens, and it can be explained in less than six minutes.

Welcome to Body City, where tiny helpers keep everything running smoothly! Today, we’re following a group of immune cells on a big adventure—one that shows what happens during a lupus flare-up. But first, meet Luma, our shining immune star:

"Hi! I’m Luma! I help your body fight off invaders—like bacteria—when everything is working right!"

Before a flare, Luma and the other immune cells move calmly, patrolling the bloodstream. "Look at us! All clear and balanced," Luma says. The body feels steady, energy is stable, and fatigue is low. "Ahh… everything feels normal," says Leg Nerve. Body stretches peacefully. "I feel calm and rested."

But sometimes… confusion hits. The immune cells get mixed up and think healthy cells are invaders! Suddenly, alarms start going off. "BEEP! BEEP!" says the warning system. Luma gasps, "Whoa! Who told us these healthy cells are bad?!"

Inflammation pops up everywhere. Cells start buzzing, swelling, and rushing to attack, even though they shouldn’t. "We’re confused! We’re supposed to protect, not hurt!" Luma cries. The Leg Nerve tingles and sparks. "Uh oh… pins and needles! My signals are scrambled!" Body feels restless, tossing and turning. "Why am I so tired but wired at the same time? This isn’t right!"

Fatigue sets in because the body is working overtime, fighting the wrong targets. Even simple tasks feel exhausting. Meanwhile, bacteria or real invaders might sneak in unnoticed, because the immune system is distracted.

Eventually, the chaos starts to slow. Colors soften, cells calm down, and Luma takes a deep breath. "Okay… let’s stop attacking healthy cells for now." Immune signals reset, and inflammation eases. The Leg Nerve feels less sparkly. "Ahh… tingles are fading. I can rest." Body stretches and sighs. "Finally… some calm."

Luma smiles, "The immune system isn’t bad—it just needs balance! During a lupus flare, your cells get confused, but understanding what’s happening inside your body helps explain feelings like fatigue, restlessness, or tingling."

Learning how your body works = superpower!
Luma waves, "See you next time in Body City!"
