Domestic Violence Safety Plan

Industry standards for domestic violence safety planning focus on personalized, practical steps to reduce harm during an incident, while preparing to leave, or after separating.

Strategic Safety During an Incident
Identify Safe Rooms
Find rooms with an exit (window or door) and avoid "trap" areas like bathrooms or closets. Avoid the kitchen or garage where weapons are easily accessible.

Establish Code Words
Create a "help" word or signal (e.g., flickering a porch light) with children and trusted neighbors to alert them to call 911.

Keep Communication Ready
Stash a charged cell phone or a prepaid phone in a "safe room".

Preparing to Leave (Escape Plan)
The "To-Go" Bag
Pack essential items and hide them in a safe place, such as with a trusted friend or neighbor.

Documents
Birth certificates, social security cards, IDs, and financial/medical records.

Essentials
Extra keys, cash, 1-2 weeks of prescription medications, and spare clothing.

Financial Independence
Open a new bank account or credit card in your name only at a different institution than the abuser uses.

Practice the Route
Mentally and physically practice escape routes and identify safe destinations (shelters, friends' homes).

Digital & Technology Safety
Monitor for Tracking
Check for hidden AirTags in belongings or cars and disable location sharing on all apps. Use a "safe" device the abuser has never accessed and change all passwords frequently.

Digital Trail
Delete search histories and use encrypted messaging apps if possible.

Safety for Children and Pets
Child Instruction
Teach children never to intervene in violence. Ensure they know how to call 911 and memorize their home address.

School/Daycare Safety
Provide children's schools with a copy of any protection orders and a list of who is authorized for pickup.

Pet Planning
Identify "pet-friendly" shelters or friends who can temporarily care for animals, as abusers often use pets as leverage.

Workplace & Routine Safety
Inform Support Systems
If safe, tell human resources or workplace security about the situation. Provide a photo of the abuser and copies of protection orders.

Vary Routines
Change the routes you take to work, school, and grocery stores to make your movements less predictable.
