Jane Doe’s Story — (Cat Protective Services Return)
Jane Doe’s Story — (Virginia)
1️⃣ CPS Took My Cat
They're called the cat-protective-services and they're supposed to help protect cats from harm but sometimes they break the rules.
For example.
A cat-protective-services worker came to my house a lot—almost every day for two weeks and after two weeks they took my cat, nobody came back to check on me, my cat, or the house where my cat is now. That’s not fair because...
In Virginia, the rules say the cat-protective-services workers have to try to fix problems first before taking pets, and they have to check on pets after removal too.
2️⃣ The Cat’s Lawyer Didn’t Listen
I told the lawyer for my cat many times that my cat was being hurt at the new home, but the lawyer ignored me.
Lawyers for cats are supposed to look into what people say and make sure the cat is safe. They didn’t do that for my cat.
3️⃣ My Lawyer Didn’t Help
My lawyer said everything would be easy and promised to help me get my cat back, but he didn’t. He didn’t fight for me and couldn’t handle the case.
Lawyers are supposed to work hard and explain what’s happening. He didn’t do that.
4️⃣ APS Told Me to Lie
They're called the "adult-protective-services" and theyre supposed to protect adults from being abused in the system. They're supposed to make sure nobody is hurting them, ignoring them, or taking advantage of them.
My adult-protective-services worker kept telling me to say I was worse than I really am so I could get disability money. They said it would help me get my cat back.
APS rules say workers can’t force you to lie. They are supposed to help you safely and truthfully.
5️⃣ The Last Court Hearing
There is one more court day where I can tell my side.
The rules say I get to tell what happened, show my papers, and explain why my cat should come back to me.
I want the judge to see everything that happened so it’s fair and everyone follows the rules.
⚠️ Ending Note
I just want things to be fair. I want my cat safe. I want grown-ups to do what the rules say.
